The Denon AVP-A1HDCI weighs 59.5 pounds.
The McIntosh MX150 weighs 30.5 pounds.

That's quite a difference. Both of these are pre/pros. No amplification. I realize weight isn't everything. But nearly a 30 pound difference has me wondering why?

Any ideas?

I think the extra weight must come from the Denon's built in tuner and networking/wi-fi capabilities...that has to be worth at least 30 lbs, right?

Perhaps part of the additional weight may come from copper shielding. I don't know if Denon is using copper shields between sections, or bottom and top, or all of the above, but if they are using copper that would account for some additional weight. Copper is quite heavy.
