AVSForum has excellent comparo between top Blu-ray players. joerod seems to have seen it all. Both DVD-A1 and the BDP-09FD are excellent players however, the 09FD is $2K less and perform better in some areas.

As for the pure audio, those Blu-rays' will not replace your MC500, Ayre, Esoteric, Reimyo CD Players.

Too add to the list of high end blu-ray players. You can get the upcoming Marantz UD9004 player. At almost $6k it ain't for the faint of heart. What makes this Marantz BD player almost $1500 more than the A1 and a staggering $3600 more than the 09? I dunno?

It's marketing. With the current state of technology, 24 bit is not even possible unless you employ superconductor tech. I think the best we can actually do is about 21.5 or 22 bits because of thermal noise.
