To me this is a shame as it means you have to re-rip all your cds onto the Olive which is liable to be a right pain the buttocks.
I have not tried it yet but I'm pretty sure the Olive will play music from a NAS drive. It just may not do it the way you are thinking. To play from a NAS drive the NAS drive will have to be on the same ethernet network the Olive is on. The music would get to the Olive either wirelessly or wired to the ethernet port, NOT the USB connection on the back of the Olive.

I could use the Olive this way but my goal is to use a server as a one box solution, I like the idea of keeping my music separate from my computer.

I won't need to reburn everything, I can load my McIntosh MS750 backup into the Olive. In fact, I'm doing that right now. The only problem so far doing this is none of the album art is importing to the Olive, just the music files.

I agree, my 2-channel music and computers are always separate.

I keep a master file of all my album art. I use it to populate any missing art on the MS-300, Itunes or my cataloging program which is Music Collector. The Olive misses quite a bit of art when loading so I grab it from that one file.

I got my Olive yesterday. After playing with it for a day I'm thinking I may return it.

So far I very pleased with the hardware, the unit is very quiet. The sound quality is great with my McIntosh MDA1000 DAC. The problem is the user interface sucks.

Here are some examples of user interface problems: If you are using your TV for the interface, after importing a CD there is no way to press "X" to complete the process so you have to switch to the front panel touch screen to press "X". If you are using the iPod to control the Olive there is no way to record a CD you put in the server. You can only use one interface at a time, so you end up switching interfaces (front panel, iPod, remote and TV) frequently, these interface changes often cause the Olive to stop responding until you do a soft reset. I've only used my new Olive for about 8 hours and I've had to "soft reset" it 5 times. There is no way to edit a CD with any of the previously mentioned interfaces, (only with a PC) this makes importing music from CDs a pain. When choosing what to play by "Album Artwork" it lists the albums in order by the album name with no way to change this, It would be much better to keep the artists album titles together. Also when choosing music this way you can only advance one album at a time, it would take a very long time to get an album that starts with the letter Z this way. My Olive just locked up again trying to do this, make that 6 lockups now.

I don't think I can live with this interface.

Victor.......How long will Olive allow you to keep the 4HD and still be able to return it? Is a returned unit refunded 100%?

It sounds to me like the Olive 4HD is not pleasing you at all.

They have a 30 day return policy, 100%.

I'm actually quite pleased with most things on the Olive. Other than the user interface the Olive is great. The user interface is pretty important, it could be a deal breaker. I realize I've been using my MS750 for about 3 years and it will take time to get used to a new interface but I'm having more problems with the Olive than I anticipated.

You are finding some of the issues with the user interface. It is very easy to switch from your monitor to the touch screen by pushing the 3 and 9 o'clock buttons on the front at the same time.

I don't like the way they do the cover flow either (album title) but I easily find the artists I want by using the alphabetical grouping.

You should be able to select what happens when you finish importing a CD and not have to select X off the front panel. Did you try the check mark key off the remote?
Jim

Did you make sure you have the latest version of the software? 4.0.3

About the only thing that fuels my desire for a music server is the ease of the GUI.

Otherwise I might as well stick with my itunes which is pretty quick and easy to control with my iphone anyway.

The Sonos and Sooloos seem to be the only easy setup, easy navigate and easy play solutions available to me now.

I still like the look of the Olive and the sound quality but a slow GUI will drive me nuts. It's a bit like the ipod interface in my Mercedes S-class. Text only and only a couple of lines at a time. Try navigating through 160GB of songs whilst driving like that!!!!!

One other point. I don't think they want you to do it but while importing music using the front touch panel, I am editing previously imported albums using the laptop interface.

Also, did you notice that they only really support Mozilla Firefox. That is not a problem for me because my MS-300 locks up with Safari and I have to use Firefox for that too.

I did find that trick in the online owners manual but the Olive locks up every time I try to change from iPod control to front panel touch screen control.

As I'm adding my huge MS750 backup (2000 CDs) and importing directly to the Olive with CDs (to compare FLAC and WAV and high rez) I'm starting to have trouble finding what I'm looking for on the Olive. Some files are getting jumbled, some artists are listed first name first and some are last name first, if I keep the Olive I'll have MUCH editing to do.

The "X" comes up just to signal the import process is complete. I tried hitting every button on the remote but I could not out until I switched back to the touch panel control.

The iPod app for the Olive is similar to itunes.
