Very interested in your impressions on the LS27 v. Ref. 5SE.

Karl,

I really liked the LS27 but the Ref5SE is a superior line stage. It is quieter, tremendous soundstage, much better bottom end and the highs are extended with finese.

Liked the Ref 5SE so much that I ordered one right away. I'm going through the break in period. It has 50 or so hours. It is sounding better as the hours increase.

Thanks,
Mike

Nice! Sorry, I'm not sure how/why I replied to an old post. :-)

Anyone done a "straight wire" vs. Ref 5 SE test to see how the Ref 5 SE affects the sound?

I found the LS-27 greatly constricted the soundstage width and lost low-level detail and reverberance but it only had 330 hours on it.

Yes, I have. REF 5 SE has 400 hours on it so far.

I still prefer going DAC direct (Ayon Skylla with volume control). Hope this changes in a couple of hundred hours. I really want the 5 SE to work well in my system.

How many hours do you have on your Ref 5se? My unit has has about 390 hours since receiving it in mid December 2011. The break in period should be done by September. Unfortunately, the Ref 250 has only 190 hours.

I have run it overnight and unattended on many occasions and now have 685 hours since February.

I would say that it sounds really nice after 600 hours and even then, there is still some improvement left. My friend is fully satisfied with his Ref5 SE at 800 hours.

I'm still at around 300. Haven't had much time to listen recently.
