Very interesting music, which I am still discovering. Second listen.
Soon, I'll be able to compare this version with Kitajenko, who seems to be THE Shostakovich director. I ordered the following box set:
But the Kofman is not bad so far. Excellent sonics!
This is a review from Amazon:
The negative remarks made about this series by various critics strike me as entirely misguided. Kofman and the Beethoven Orchestra deliver a massively distinguished performance. One can almost see the Nazi armor advancing into Russia. My suspicion here is that some Europeans have simply decided that a German conductor and orchestra is not allowed to deliver a great performance of Shostakovich. I think it's time for that particular war to be over. This is a superb performance.
