The K2 series of JBL speakers was introdusce in 1989 to supercede the Everest. That year, the K2-S9500 received Stereo Sound magazine's Component of the Year award. It went into regular production in 1990 and was a success even with a price tag of over $30,000/pr. When you consider the current model K2 S9900 at $44,650 a pair, and factor inflation, the K2 S9900's are far cheaper than the original design of 20 years ago.
